Installing themes on Android?

I finally just rooted my Droid X on my Mac. Now I want to apply a theme. I’m very close, and know how to flash the theme and boot in recovery mode, however, I keep coming across random complications like downloaded for Cyanogenmod or Sapphire or Metamorph etc..I just need good instructions for INSTALLING A THEME and what if any apps I need to do so (Sapphire..etc?)

Steps for installing a theme:
1 find a theme that fits you ROM, there are two types: non-sense(AOSP, Cyanogen Mod, MIUI), and Sense based(LeeDroid, AuraXTSense)
2 copy the zip into your SD card
3 rebbot into recovery
4.backup
5 apply theme and reboot

themes basically are modifications only, they do not require any apps, they just overwrite current interface
